Occupational records

Trades, professions and the working lives of your ancestors.

Many of our ancestors are recorded through their work. Apprenticeship and guild records, professional and trade listings, and the registers of bodies such as the police, the railways and the civil service can all place a named person in a particular role, place and time.

Occupational sources are especially useful for confirming an identity where common names make the parish and civil records ambiguous — a recorded trade can be the detail that links one record confidently to another.
